The EIMC Professional Network brings together health and exercise professionals promoting physical activity as a chronic disease prevention and management strategy to improve the health of Canadians. HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS:
Regulated health care professionals may join the EIMC Professional Network as Providers or Supporters:
Provider Members: Regulated health care professionals who can perform assessments, detailed exercise prescription, instruction, supervision, and referral as required (i.e. sport medicine physicians, chiropractors, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and regulated kinesiologists in Ontario).
Provider Members:
- Accept patient referrals from other health care professionals for continued physical activity counseling and prescription
- Support the EIM philosophy
- Ask every patient, every time about physical activity levels, and work with their patients to help them achieve their physical activity goals
- Provide assessment, counseling strategies for behaviour change, advice, and education about the importance of physical activity
Supporter Members: Regulated health professionals who have, within their scope of practice, the ability to recommend physical activity and make referrals for more detailed exercise prescription and counselling (i.e. family physicians, specialist physicians, nurses, dieticians, and psychologists)
Supporter Members:
- Support the EIM philosophy
- Endeavor to ask every patient, every time about physical activity levels
- Work with their patients to help them achieve their physical activity and health goals through education and referral for additional assessment and counselling.

Members support national EIMC leadership; our passionate multidisciplinary expert team is developing educational workshops, exercise prescription, referral and other decision-making tools that support professionals to assess, advise, prescribe and refer patients to community or clinical physical activity/exercise resources that support their health goals.

EXERCISE PROFESSIONALS:
EIMC recognizes exercise professionals at 2 levels:
- EIMC Level 1 professionals have a minimum 2-year college level or university exercise science background
- EIMC Level 2 professionals have an undergraduate or higher-level exercise science degree.
EIMC Recognized exercise professionals have the knowledge, skills and competencies to motivate and support your patients through the behaviour change process. They can work with healthy inactive patients, as well as work competently with patients at risk of, or with established chronic disease who are medically cleared for independent or supervised exercise prescription.
EIMC Patient Categories:
- Apparently healthy individuals with no constraints for regular participation in physical activity and exercise;
- Asymptomatic individuals with a single chronic disease/condition controlled with physician-prescribed therapies; and
- Patients who have a higher risk than those in categories A and B above including those who have more than one chronic disease or who may require clinical monitoring during exercise.
How do I know which EIMC Professional Level to refer to?
- Level 1 EIMC recognized professionals can safely and effectively prescribe physical activity to patients in categories A and B. The benefits of physical activity outweigh any risks.
- Level 2 EIMC recognized professionals have advanced knowledge and expertise in exercise management for those with chronic disease. Level 2 EIMC recognized professionals can safely and effectively work with patients in categories A, B and C.
