About EIMS

Exercise is Medicine Singapore

Exercise Is Medicine Singapore (EIMS) is a programme spearheaded by Singapore Sport and Exercise Medicine Centre @ CGH to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of preventing and treating diseases. Exercise is Medicine Singapore is the Singapore chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) global Exercise is Medicine initiative. The national EIM Task Forces are grouped into regional centres, where Singapore's EIM Task Force falls under the Southeast Asia EIM Regional Centre.

Our Vision

To make physical activity and exercise a standard part of a disease prevention and treatment medical paradigm in Singapore.

For physical activity to be considered by all health care providers as a vital sign in every patient visit, and that patients are effectively counselled and referred as to their physical activity and health needs, thus leading to overall improvement in the public's health and long-term reduction in health care cost.

Our Initiative Goals

For physical activity to become a vital sign, with health care providers routinely discussing it with each of their patients.

For the Physician to either prescribe appropriate physical activity to each patient or to refer the patient to a certified health and fitness professional to get a physical activity prescription.

To put in place a framework for allied health and fitness professionals to work with physicians in implementing the exercise plan.

For the Public to begin to ask for and expect Physicians to discuss physical activity during each office visit.

Area 1   Make available tools, training, and referral mechanisms for physicians and other health care providers.

Area 2 Strengthen the science and evidence for the efficacy of exercise prescription in healthcare settings.

Area 3   Pursue policy interventions that support Exercise is Medicine.

Area 4   Stage patient advocacy and marketing campaigns.

Area 5   Build coalitions and partnerships.

Area 6  Identify, develop and disseminate "what works" models for patients as well as entire communities.

Area 7  Create a website with strategy, content and functions that support all the program elements of Exercise Is Medicine.
